You've got your sewing machine. You are ready to start making your own clothes. But how to know the best pattern to pick?

The answer to this question will be a balancing act of giving yourself a bit of a challenge but not making things so difficult that you don't enjoy sewing it.

Firstly, consider starting with patterns from independent companies. These are normally easier to follow as they are more likely to be designed for beginners and have fewer pattern variations that need to be navigated. The 'big four' commercial pattern companies (Butternick, McCalls, Vogue and Simplicity) have loads of great options but can be a bit overwhelming at first (even if they are labelled as 'easy').

Secondly, look at how many techniques are involved in the pattern. For example, a pattern with gathering, darts and set in sleeves would be 3 different techniques. It's a good idea to try new skills with a pattern but you don't want to try them all at once! Aim for 1 or at most 2 new skills at a time so you can build some confidence.

Finally, think about fit. If the pattern is designed to be close fitting then it will be more difficult to get right . Again, you can challenge yourself here but just be aware that this may be more difficult if you need to make adjustments for the pattern to fit. If you want to work on fitting then it's always a good idea to make a toile (mock-up) in calico or an old bedsheet before you cut into your lovely fabric.

Whatever you pick, the most important thing is to be proud of what you have made! Everyone will make mistakes but trust me- it will only be you that notices (have you ever looked at your shop bought clothes really closely?? Plenty of mistakes there too!). And just remember, when someone says they love your outfit, you get to say 'Thank you I made it!'
