It's the big decision when you start to sew- what machine to buy!? There are so many options out there and how do you know what you will need!
ESSENTIAL FEATURES
For a beginner sewist, the essentials are pretty simple. You need a basic straight stitch with the ability to change the length. The other important stitch is zig zag stitch for finishing seams. A mechanical machine is all you need (as opposed to a computerised machine with a screen for changing stitch types/ lengths).
NICE TO HAVE FEATURES
Most machines will give you the basics, so what else would you look for? A one step button hole is probably top of our nice to have list, particularly if you are thinking about trying out some dressmaking in the future. Similarly, a stretch stitch can be very useful (the basic zig zag stitch would work for this but some machines have a specific type of zig zag for stretch fabrics). Finally, some machine have an overcasting stitch which is a neater finish for your garments than the basic zig zag.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Once you have decided on what features you want you can start to compare machines. We would recommend sticking with reliable brands (such as Brother or Janome) who produce the same machines over many years. This means you will be able to find a good number of reviews for their machines. Other brands produce a lot of versions which are often sold off cheaper (for example in budget supermarkets) so it is harder to compare.
Another good option is to look for refurbished machines. These should always include all parts and a manual but may give you a better machine for your money.
